A Parade on La Befana

On Friday we decided to go for a walk around town. The streets were packed -- we very quickly realized it was La Befana. As we passed by Palazzo Pitti, we saw a ton of people in Renaissance costume. A few hours later (after a lunch at Buongustai, yum!) we actually got stuck in the city center because we couldn't find a way around the parade that was now taking place. So, we just hung out in Piazza della Signoria for a while and watched the parade. It was great!

The Christmas Lights are Up!

The lights in the neighborhood, that is. The city center is covered with beautiful white Christmas lights and even in the daytime there is something special about them. We took a walk last night for groceries and the Ponte Vecchio looked so pretty all lit up! I hate to be corny, but it really did look quite magical.

The lights in our neighorhood haven't come on yet -- have the ones in the historic center come on yet? I'm starting to wonder if there is some big celebration where the lights get switched on. Anyone know?

P.S. Our episode of House Hunters International aired last night. Friends and family (people required to be nice to us) say we looked slightly normal and not overly obnoxious. Yay! If you just found us after watching the episode and this is your first time reading our blog, click here.

Living in Florence: Just another day in the neighborhood

Rob and I were walking back from a little date day this weekend when we happened upon a parade of folks in Renaissance garb -- which, surprisingly, isn't all that rare here in Florence.

It took some serious internet sleuthing to figure out what the parade was for: Campionato di tiro con la balestra a braccio. I'll save you a trip to Google Translate...it's a crossbow competition. I'm pretty sure if we had known that at the time Rob would have insisted on following the parade and watching.

florence, italy: easter and il scoppio del carro

Scoppio del Carro

Scoppio del Carro

Scoppio del Carro

Scoppio del Carro

We accidentally slept in today and almost missed Scoppio del Carro (history below). We quickly suited up Winston and headed out for a brisk walk across the river. We got there with a few minutes to spare and hung out with the oxen in Piazza della Repubblica...Winston did not know what to think about those HUGE animals.

By accident, we happened down a street that ended up being perfect for watching the actual exploding of the cart. So much fun!

History

The Scoppio del Carro, or Explosion of the Cart, is a mixed pagan/religious ceremony. Marking both Easter and Spring, the successful ignition of the cart guarantees good crops, a successful harvest, stable civic life and bountiful trade, as well as signifying the passage of new holy fire to light those extinguished on Good Friday.

A thirty-foot carved and painted wooden cart (the present version is over 150 years old) is pulled by flower- bedecked white oxen from Porta al Prato to Piazza del Duomo. A mechanical dove ‘flies’ down a line through the open doors of the cathedral, picks up ‘fire’ at the altar, returns to the cart and ignites the explosion of one of the best day-time fireworks display in the world.

It was during the pontificate of Leo X (Giovanni de’Medici, 1513-1521), the ‘colombina‘ – the mechanical bird, shaped like a dove with an olive branch in its beak – was used for the first time. At the Gloria of the Easter Mass, the deacon uses holy fire kindled from the stone chips – obtained during the crusades of 1099 from the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem – to light a fuse attached to the dove.

this weekend in florence: the chocolate festival

I'm not a big fan of chocolate, but the festival in Santa Croce this past weekend had even me drooling at all of the deliciousness at our fingertips. About a dozen artisanal chocolate makers are in town to showcase their products. Seriously, I've never seen so many varieties of chocolate products in one place!

Rob and I shared a treat of fresh strawberries topped with warm chocolate. In typical Rob fashion, he licked the cup clean.

P.S. Scott and Steph: if you guys read the blog you may be excited to know that a tasty treat is coming from Italy for you guys :-)
