Living in Florence: More Photos from the Bargello, Part 2

DSC00239

I was looking through our photos from the Bargello visit a few weekends ago and realized that there were still a few more that I wanted to share. It's fun to play tourist, especially at a museum like the Bargello where the art, architecture and history are all really interesting. Fun fact: The three statues in the photo above and to the left used to be in Porta Romana right near our apartment. And, by "used to be," I mean like 300 years ago.

The day we were at the Bargello was a really bright day and there was a ton of sunlight coming in through the windows. It was so pretty and, as such, I have about a gazillion window photos from the Bargello. Thankfully for our blog readers, I've learned to edit down the number of photos that I include in posts!

I hope everyone has fun plans for the weekend. Wine Town is this weekend so, naturally, we'll be attending. Fingers crossed that we don't get stuck in a hail storm (again).

P.S. For those wondering what Winston has been up to lately, this is a pretty good recap:

Living in Florence: More Photos from the Bargello

One of the things that I was most pleasantly surprised by in the Bargello was all of the decorative accessories on display. From jewelry to textiles to home decor, there seemed to be beautiful old items at every turn -- in addition to fantastic sculpture and architecture.

What really caught my eye was the tie-dyed-meets-Missoni-meets-Medici pottery, pictured in the top left of the above collage. Honestly, if that was for sale right now I'd scoop it up in a second.

Living in Florence: A Weekend Date at the Bargello

Rob and I had a little impromptu date day this past Saturday. We've been talking about going to the Bargello Museum since our first week here and we decided it was finally time to get our butts over there and check it out. Our laziness with checking out the Bargello is made even more lame when you consider the fact that entry is free with our Amici degli Uffizi cards. Lazy bums, I know.

I can't believe we waited this long to go. I can't speak for Rob, but I think the Bargello might be my favorite museum. Why? First of all, the building is steeped in history and houses lots of sculpture -- which I've slowly come to realize may just be my favorite type of art. I've seen Donatello's David so many times in books that it was almost surreal to see it standing (somewhat alone) in a massive room in the Bargello.

Because the Bargello was, um, totally empty, we basically got to enjoy the art, architecture and history at a great pace and without the pressure of crowds. Not more than 2 minutes walk away the Uffizi was completely packed, yet the Bargello was quiet and calm. I loved it!

Something else I loved about the Bargello is that despite all of the wonderful artwork exhibited, the place didn't feel visually packed. I love the Uffizi and Palazzo Pitti galleries, but sometimes when I walk out of there my head is spinning because I'm massively over-stimulated. The Bargello felt like a breath of fresh air in that respect. If you're visiting Florence, I really do urge you to check out this wonderful museum.
